How to Calculate GPA

Your Grade Point Average is calculated by multiplying each course grade by its credit hours, adding the totals, and dividing by total credits:

GPA = Sum of (Grade Points x Credits) / Total Credits

Most US colleges use a 4.0 scale where A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. Plus and minus grades adjust these by +0.3 or -0.3 (e.g., B+ = 3.3, B- = 2.7).

Why GPA Matters

Your GPA affects academic standing, scholarship eligibility, graduate school admissions, and some job applications. Most programs require a minimum 2.0 to remain in good standing, while competitive graduate programs often look for 3.5 and above.

GPA Calculator FAQ

What is a good GPA?
A GPA of 3.0 (B average) is generally considered good. A 3.5 or higher is very competitive for most graduate programs and scholarships. A 4.0 is a perfect GPA meaning straight A grades in every course.
How do weighted GPAs work?
Some high schools use weighted GPAs where honors or AP classes earn extra points (e.g., an A in AP = 5.0 instead of 4.0). This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.
